Carla Bruni wants kids

Former model Carla Bruni has announced she wants kids. The new wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy is keen to begin a family soon. Bruni, who is 40, has a seven year old son from another relationship and wants to provide Aurelian with a sibling if she's "young enough." Bruni and Sarkozy have been married less than a year.

Bruni also has a burgeoning career as a pop star to consider in addition to her duties as the President's wife. How will the beauty ever find time to be a mommy (again)? She has sworn off using fertility treatments to find herself in the family way, referring the matter over to a nature. AS we've all had rammed down our throats for ages, a woman's fertility begins a downhill course at twenty-seven (or so current wisdom holds).

Many women are having children later and later in life, and are therefore turning to the very thing Bruni is eschewing (at least in print) to become mothers. Being a model, pop star, or politician's wife--or all three--doesn't seem to be interfering with Carla's desire to add to her family. Will she become pregnant? Will she turn to fertility treatments? Only Carla (and mother nature) knows. Good luck to Carla and Nicolas!

Angie Harmon expecting third child

angie harmon and jason sehornBrad Pitt's girlfriend isn't the only gorgeous Angie making babies these days. 36-year-old actress Angie Harmon and her equally gorgeous husband, former New York Giant Jason Sehorn, are reportedly expecting their third child. Life and Style Weekly has the scoop, with an insider proclaiming Angie "thrilled" with her growing family. "They're about four months into the pregnancy," the insider says.

Until we hear it from Angie's own lips, it's all just speculation of course. But Angie has made no secret of the fact that she wants a large family, even if she has to get take advantage of her husband in order to accomplish that. "Jason wants one more, and I want two or three more, so I may have to get him drunk on date night," she told Cookie magazine last year.

Angie and Jason are already parents to two girls, 4-year-old Finley Faith and 3-year-old Avery Grace. Congratulations!

Engaged and underage

As you may be aware, MTV has a show on the air called Engaged and Underage. Now in its second season, the show follows young couples headed down the aisle--couples family and friends think are too young to be doing so. Last year's season introduced us to couples facing more than just age discrimination. One couple dealt with interracial tensions from their families and another with a pregnancy. The show purports to follow the couples around reality-television style, monitoring the drama but not helping to create it.

Naturally a lot of hype surrounds this programming. Reality shows are primed to be as explosive and controversial as possible. Whether you believe in reality television or not, it's best not to question that they tend to present people in less than their best light. As far as this show is concerned, although the publicity from the show claims to simply follow these people around, I get the impression they're courting controversy as much as possible.

The question is, just how young is too young to get married? These kids are out of high school. Some of them are in their early twenties. That sounds like an adult to me. If you're old enough to get drafted, shouldn't you be old enough to get married? State laws can help a couple decide when they can legally tie the knot, but other than that it's pressure from friends, family and society that sway most couples to either get married, or, as a recent trend has continued, wait until they're much older--or not get married at all!

Have you seen the show? Do you agree with the programming or the decision to share the stories of these young couples with the world? Just how young is too young to get married?

Domain names for babies

Preparing for the arrival of a new baby is a busy time for all parents, including celebrities. Security forces have to be re-configured, private hospital suites (or entire wings, in some cases) secured, and domain names purchased before anyone else snags them.

The very day the Jolie-Pitt twins were born, their handsome Daddy's law firm purchased the following domain names:

knoxleonjoliepitt.com
knoxleonjoliepitt.net
knoxleonjoliepitt.us
knoxleonjoliepitt.org
knoxleonjoliepitt.biz
knoxleonjoliepitt.info

viviennejoliepitt.com
viviennejoliepitt.net
viviennejoliepitt.us

Unlike the Jolie-Potts, most parents don't purchase every combination of domain name possible, but snagging the domain rights for new babies has been going on for a while now. Some parents even using domain availability searches as a final litmus test on deciding what to name their upcoming child.

Buying the domain name for a new baby might make a great and unique gift for internet savvy new parents, too. They could use it to start a blog about the baby for friends and relatives until the child is old enough to take it over on their own.

Did you buy the domain names of your children?

Celebrity parents work hard for their money

Kyra SedgewickIt's time for TV Guide's annual salary survey, that time of year when we get to find out how much our favorite personalities get paid every year for entertaining us after the kids have gone to bed. These celebs all have kids at home, but still manage to bring home some pretty serious bacon:
  • Charlie Sheen: $825,000 per episode of "Two and a Half Men"
  • Mariska Hargitay: $400,000 per episode for playing Det. Olivia Benson on "Law & Order: SVU"
  • Heidi Klum: "Project Runway" earns her $2.5 million a year
  • Katie Couric: $15 million yearly for anchoring CBS News
  • Matt Laurer: $12 mil -- no matter where he is in the world -- for NBC's "Today" show
  • Tiki Barber: $2 million annually for working as an NFL analyst and "Today" show correspondent
  • David Letterman: $32 million a year for yukking it up on late night TV
  • John Stewart: $14 million a year for his work on "The Daily Show"
Before you start to feel bad about your paycheck-to-paycheck life, keep this in mind. Kyra Sedgwick, who makes $275,000 an episode on "The Closer," has been living in California where the series is filmed for four years. Her 16-year-old daughter, on the other hand, lives in NYC with the rest of her family. Is the trade-off worth it? I don't know, but seeing what some celebrities have to go through to strike it rich can make you appreciate your more anonymous lifestyle... even if it doesn't come with a million dollar paycheck.

Brangelina babies revealed!

After nine long months, the genetic perfection that results when Brad Pitt DNA combines with Angelina Jolie genes has finally been unveiled. Have you seen the itty bitty babes yet? The photos are at People and Hello!, go ahead and take a look first. I have time!

Okay, ADORABLE, right?! The wee Jolie lips? That teeny smile! (How do they get newborns to do that, anyway?! Sean Preston was smiling for his People cover too!) Momma and Daddy looking so happy and adoringly at their new babies! The inset at the top of doll-baby Shiloh holding a baby! IT'S TOO MUCH GOODNESS!

But after the first ovary-exploding viewing, I took another look and what really stood out was the WHITENESS. Brad's shirts are snowy. Angelina's top/dress/nightgown is pristine.. The baby's clothes and blanket are devoid of color. Shiloh's dress is like an angel's wing.

I can accept that Angelina gave birth three weeks ago, yet is down to one chin and has no dark circles under her eyes. I can accept that Brad, who is helping wrangle the four other kids in the house, is clean-shaven, save for the ridiculous growth on his chin that appears intentional.

What I cannot fathom is purposely dressing newborn twins, a two-year-old,and the adults caring for them in pure white and having the entire group remain devoid of bodily fluids, peanut butter and jelly, dirt, Popsicle, or Play-Dough for even a photo shoot. The only white I ever wore when caring for a newborn was the spots of spit-up that had dried on my clothes and years later, it's still a challenging color for me.

Is this Hollywood magic? Industrial size Tide To-Go pens? WHAT IS THE SECRET?!

John McCain makes Kathy Hilton mad

Kathy HiltonKathy Hilton doesn't appreciate John McCain's sense of humor. The presumptive Republican nominee recently used Hilton's daughter, Paris, in what many are calling a negative TV ad. The ad showed images of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears surrounded by paparazzi, then went on to lump Barack Obama into this category of "celebrity".

McCain says that the ad was meant to "inject humor" into the campaign, but Kathy Hilton isn't laughing. She told Huffington Post, "It is a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign." She speaks from experience; the Hiltons donated $4600 to McCain's campaign.

I'm sure that it's been painful for Kathy to see Paris portrayed in a negative light over and over again in the press (not that it wasn't deserved), but to have a candidate who you support vocally and financially put your daughter's image into this kind of ad has to sting.

Angelina Jolie says family is "chaos"

As the world will know soon enough if it doesn't already, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are debuting the pictures of their newborn twins today. Courtesy of People Magazine, who reportedly paid $14 million for the pictures, which will be given to a charity of the Jolie-Pitt's choice, the pictures feature mom and dad with the newborn twins and big sister Shiloh holding a babe.

Says Angelina Jolie about her ever-expanding family, which now clocks in at six, the brood is "chaos." She means that in a good way, of course, but how could it be otherwise with that many children in the house? I have one child with another on the way and sometimes wonder how I'm going to get through my day! Twins Knox and Vivienne join Maddox, Pax, and Zahara as well as Shiloh.

Jolie adds that despite the zaniness, she and the family are having a great time. She also claims her daughters Shiloh and Zahara have taken on the role of "little mommies" by helping change the twins and pick out their clothes. Perhaps she can give us some hints and tips on how to get the older kids to help out with the new ones!

Congrats to the couple, who are clearly delighted with their newest additions!

Katherine Heigl is too busy for children

Actress and break-out movie sensation Katherine Heigl is too busy for children. The Grey's Anatomy star, whose recent silver screen hits include 27 Dresses and Knocked Up, says she is far too busy to consider having kids.

The newlywed's husband, musician Josh Kelley, basically couldn't agree more. According to him he's even taken some time off touring to focus more on music. Once you're married, though, inevitably comes all the questions about when you'll be starting a family.

Like many, many women before her, famous and not, Heigl is spurring on the trend of having a baby later in life (if indeed she wants kids at all). With a career as full and successful as Katherine's, I can certainly understand putting off motherhood for a while. Or, maybe the experiences she had while playing a pregnant woman in Knocked Up scared her!!!

Miley Cyrus selling condoms?

Miley Cyrus is starting to get a reputation as a bit of a naughty girl. She proudly professes her love of Sex and The City and allows herself to be photographed in all manner of undress. And when she is fully clothed, her outfits are sometimes more appropriate for a 25-year-old than a teen girl. Maybe all that is why the folks at LifeStyles Condoms think she would make a perfect spokesperson for their products.

Despite the fact that Miley is under the age of consent in most states, LifeStyles says they offered her $1 million to shill their products. "Pop culture proves that teens are more ready than ever to discuss the subject of sex," says Carol Carrozza, LifeStyle's VP of marketing, . "We believe that Miley is both influential and relatable to this afflicted set - and is the obvious choice to get the message of safe sex out to teens across America."

I can't argue with that. If Miley talked about safe sex, you can bet there would be lots of girls paying attention. The problem is that Miley can't talk about sex because she is a virgin and intends to stay that way until marriage. I know this is true because she has a purity ring to prove it. At any rate, Miley's rep say they haven't even received such an offer and would reject it if they did.

Brangelina twin photos to debut online Sunday!

Wondering if the latest additions to the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt clan most resemble their famous mommy or their daddy? You might soon be able to decide for yourself. Word is that the first pictures of baby Knox and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt will be available at People.com this Sunday at 7 p.m. EST.

If you'd rather have a print copy, People magazine will have photos of the darling duo in Monday's edition. If you're not in the US, look for the superstar spawn in OK! magazine, which won worldwide rights to photos of the babes.

People spokeswoman Nancy Valentino said she didn't know how much was paid for the photos, but the talk is that the pay-out this time is between $10 and 15 MILLION dollars, which the Jolie-Pitts have said will be donated to charity.

Photos of the couple's newborn daughter Shiloh showed beyond a shadow of a doubt she got her mommy's unmistakable lips, reportedly raised over $4 million for charity.

I really like that Angelina and Brad donate this money to charity. It makes it so much easier to justify tossing that issue of People among the other items in the grocery cart because it's not celebrity voyeurism, it's a way to SAVE THE WORLD!

Rosie O'Donnell taking blogging break

Unless you've maintained one of your own, it's difficult to describe how addictive keeping a blog can be. Having a corner of the internet people visit just to read your words and thoughts on life and issues can make an ordinary housewife feel like an A-list celebrity.

So you might guess it would be easier for a celebrity to give up their blogging habit, as they already have opportunities in the limelight and have supporters and fans outside the internet. Rosie O'Donnell, who just announced plans to take a blogging break for the month of August, begs to differ. Her most recent blog post read:

i am taking off august
in blog-ville
2 c if i can
rosie unplugged
happy summer peeps
peace in
peace out

The opinionated former talk show host shared with People magazine, "I'm wondering if I can do it. Every time I watch [the TV show] Intervention I'm like, 'They need this show for people who need to get off their computers!' My real addiction is the computer and the blog."

Some things Rosie could do to help survive her non-blogging month:

  • Take the kids to the beach
  • Create toupees for Donald Trump out of craft supplies
  • Prank call "The View"
  • Cover Elizabeth Hasselbeck's toilet seats with plastic wrap
  • Drop in on Martha Stewart around mealtime
  • Volunteer

Kathy Hilton setting a better example for her kids

We all know that Paris Hilton likes to party. We also know that on at least one occasion, she didn't let her inebriated state stop her from getting behind the wheel of a car. She was convicted of driving while intoxicated back in 2006 and in 2007, she spent time in jail for violating the terms of her probation. While the responsibility for those bad decisions rests firmly on Paris' own shoulders, it sounds like her mom feels at least partly to blame.

Although Kathy Hilton has never had a drinking problem, she says Paris' issues made her want to set a better example for her family. In order to "walk the walk", she says she gave up drinking altogether and recently celebrated one year of sobriety.

Based on the behavior of her famous daughter, Kathy Hilton may not be a likely candidate for mother of the year, but I respect what she is trying to do. Children do learn by example and parents have a responsibility to try to set a good one. Unfortunately, that may have come too late for the Hilton kids. Just this past February, Kathy's 18-year-old son Barron got his own DWI.

Women fight to take back natural childbirth

Is natural childbirth going the way of the dinosaur? Ask many new moms and a lot of doctors and midwives, and you may be surprised to find the answer is yes. Between increasing costs at hospitals, liability and the demand by insurance companies for medical professionals to take on more and more patients each year, thereby limiting the amount of time one can spend on an individual labor, the option for a natural childbirth seems to lessen by the day.

Instead of having a regular old labor, complete with the uncertainty of when the baby would arrive and lots of pushing and pain, more and more women--and their care providers--are getting C-sections. Celebrities like Posh Beckham have helped speed the plow in the C-section trend by making no bones about scheduling the birth of her three sons. The woman has a career to think of and I simply can't imagine her having ten extra minutes for her water to break, can you? Celebrities opting for this surgery--and, uhm, yeah, it's considered MAJOR SURGERY--have paved the way for making it a norm for regular folks too. Women are also opting to get epidurals to ease the pain of childbirth as their doctors increase the use of pitocin and other drugs to jump start a labor. Pitocin can increase the pain of childbirth, too, so when the doc gives one more often than not a woman gets an epidural too. Many feel this process causes problems which then leads to more C-sections.

Other celebrities, like Ricky Lake, are spearheading the movement of natural childbirth. Lake had her baby at home with the help of a midwife. And there are many women who prefer to go about it the non-medicalized way, without drugs or a scheduled C. Problem is, they're finding it harder and harder to do so. I don't want to get into a discussion of whether or not it's "right" to have a natural birth, a C-section or an epidural any more than I want to discuss whether expectant mothers should be playing Metallica or Brahms during labor. What I do think warrants discussion is how we as women can preserve the right to have our babies the way we want to have them, and not bowing to the demands of the insurance business or doctors who act out of fear of malpractice suits.

Mark Wahlberg won't sell baby pictures

Mark Wahlberg

Actor Mark Wahlberg has vowed not to sell the baby pictures of his new child-to-be. Marky Mark is putting a stop to any offers from magazines before they even get started, insisting he will not be selling his baby photos like so many other celebrity parents have of late.

The actor is expecting his third child with girlfriend (and perhaps soon to be wife) Rhea Durham, who is due in September. He is already father to two other children with Durham, Ella, who is four and Michael, who is two. I don't recall Mark pimping out pictures of either of them to the tabloids either!

Wahlberg wants to keep the birth and his family private, which is a welcome refreshment to the baby picture overload we've been experiencing lately, our fascination with which is borderline disgusting! Rumor also had it that new mom Nicole Kidman and her husband Keith Urban would not be selling pictures of their new daughter, Sunday Rose. Perhaps there is a new celebrity parenting trend afoot?
